Nicaraguan Police on Alert to Prevent the Entrance of Gang Members

first_imgBy Dialogo February 18, 2010 The Nicaraguan police declared a “general alert” to prevent the entrance of gangs operating in neighboring countries and their influence on criminal youth groups in the country, an official source announced. The director of the police, First Commissioner Aminta Granera, instructed all structures to “be alert; we have to maximize our efforts so that the danger of the gangs from the north (of Central America) does not shift here, which would cause serious problems if they came and provoked a jump in the activities of youth groups or gangs in Nicaragua.” Nicaragua does not have criminal gangs of the kind that operate in El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, and the youth groups or gangs that it does have are very different qualitatively; they do not have links to organized crime, the police chief explained during an annual report to President Daniel Ortega. The authorities’ alarm skyrocketed following the capture in different parts of the country last year of fourteen members of the Mara Salvatrucha and M-18 gangs, who were deported to their countries of origin. The police chief emphasized that Nicaragua’s police system is effective, since “we are capable of detecting (the gang members), and we did not give them time to create a social base or organize groups in the country.” Granera highlighted the police’s preventive work in dealing with youth groups or gangs, which succeeded in drawing four hundred young people away from these groups in 2009. The police are currently working with 11,490 young people who participate in sports groups, and this effort has been increased, with 25,150 people, including officers, young people, and community members, participating in the effort to prevent youth violence, she specified.last_img read more

Girl, 11, ‘consented’ to sex with man (France)

first_imgNZ Herald 28 September 2017Family First Comment: A very very disturbing case. “In a decision that’s prompted anger, prosecutors decided “there was no violence, no constraint, no threat, and no surprise” on the part of the man to justify the charge of rape. Instead, the 28-year-old has only been charged with sexual abuse of a minor. “Essentially they judged that she had consented to the sexual encounter because she was not physically forced into the act,” Rights group Le Voix de l’Enfant said in a statement: “The question of consent or its absence should never even be asked when it comes to rape victims who are minors”.A shocking court decision that declared an 11-year-old girl consented to sex with a man, 28, has sparked outrage in France.Prosecutors deemed the child had engaged in a consensual ” sexual relationship” with the man, leading to immediate backlash from children’s rights groups. The case centred on allegations the man lured the girl from a park in the northern Paris suburb of Montmagny to his nearby home in April. The Local news outlet reported the man allegedly raped her. The girl’s family said she was “paralysed” by fear and “unable to defend herself”.But in a decision that’s prompted anger, prosecutors decided “there was no violence, no constraint, no threat, and no surprise” on the part of the man to justify the charge of rape.Instead, the 28-year-old has only been charged with sexual abuse of a minor.“Essentially they judged that she had consented to the sexual encounter because she was not physically forced into the act,” The Local reported.READ MORE: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=11927206last_img read more

Dominica government remains committed to becoming shareholders in LIAT

first_imgPrime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit. (file photo)The government of Dominica has announced its commitment to becoming shareholders in the regional air carrier, Leeward Islands Air Transportation (LIAT).Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit revealed on Wednesday that Dominica has been given the green light to own shares in the airline and finalization of arrangements will take place in 2012, dismissing allegations that no discussions has been held with shareholders of LIAT in Dominica’s interest. “The government of Dominica remains committed to becoming a shareholder in LIAT. I’ve heard people say that we’ve not been keeping our promises; that’s not true at all. This matter has been discussed with the shareholder governments, shareholder prime ministers they have in fact given their okay for Dominica to become a shareholder. We need to formalize this arrangement in 2012 as we indicated, but we believe that it is an important strategic move by the government of Dominica to become a shareholder of LIAT.”The prime minister also stated that while some people criticize LIAT, the airline provides an essential service to the Dominican people and the economy.“One can criticize LIAT as often as you wish but one cannot set aside the importance of the service which LIAT provides to Dominica and the importance of LIAT’s service to Dominicans and the economy of Dominica because LIAT is the carrier that brings in the most passengers into the country.”Hon. Hector John. (file photo)Mr Skerrit further noted that the government is not in the business of subsidizing airlines or paying for empty seats, which is an option available to them. However, “to avoid us having to subsidize or to pay for empty seats for any airlines in the future and present, that the best way towards implementing our strategic perspective is to become shareholders of LIAT once again. One must not forget that we used to be shareholders in LIAT until the new LIAT came about,” he said.Meantime leader of the Opposition United Workers Party Hector John called on the government earlier this month to reconsider its decision in light of recent issues affecting the airline.John argues that based on the financial difficulties which the airline is faced with it might be best if the government re-evaluates their decision for Dominica to own shares in the company. “We heard that the prime minister is making moves to see how Dominica can become a member of LIAT and right now we are hearing that the airline is in some serious financial difficulties. I would advise the PM to hold on a while, re-evaluate the situation and see if it’s in the country’s best interest,” he said.Dominica Vibes News Share 14 Views   no discussions Share Sharing is caring!center_img LocalNews Dominica government remains committed to becoming shareholders in LIAT by: – December 15, 2011 Share Tweetlast_img read more
