Building a cash position may seem like a safe and sensible solution in troubled times, but it offers no growth potential. Particularly when interest rates are close to zero.Is Bitcoin a good investment? The allure of Cryptocurrencies when the world is in chaos is understandable but highly debatable. Cryptocurrencies have been around for over 10 years and have come a long way since a Bitcoin cost £10. There are now too many to choose from and they are far from mainstream. One of the driving forces behind their implementation was to create a coin of the people in a decentralised network with a transparent set of rules. A reason it has achieved popularity is the ability to make purchases anonymously. However, I struggle to grasp how total anonymity can be guaranteed if you are paying for your Bitcoin with your own credit or bank card. Yes, you could buy a prepaid card and use that, but it is a convoluted process to go through. Buying cryptocurrencies is more complex than opening a traditional bank account or a Stocks and Shares ISA. If you want to liquidate back into cash, it is not a quick and easy process. And Bitcoin has also seen crazy price volatility, which makes it risky. 5G is here – and shares of this ‘sleeping giant’ could be a great way for you to potentially profit!According to one leading industry firm, the 5G boom could create a global industry worth US$12.3 TRILLION out of thin air…And if you click here we’ll show you something that could be key to unlocking 5G’s full potential…Value investing for the winBillionaire investor Warren Buffett is a big advocate of value investing. It is how he has compounded his considerable wealth over several decades, as have many of his followers. The premise of it is to buy stocks at a price lower than their intrinsic value. Choosing stocks in this way can be difficult because if a stock is undervalued, it often has issues that make it look a risky buy. However, given the uncertainty surrounding global financial markets today, this means many stocks have fallen to create value investments that could be worth it for the long term. The future is electricA FTSE 100 stock I like the look of today is SSE (LSE:SSE). It has a dividend yield of over 8%, a price-to-earnings ratio of 8 and earnings per share are £1.38. Fundamentals like that are what Warren Buffett would consider a value investment. It is focused on growing in the renewables space and has been making significant moves to do so. Its profits on revenue for 2019 were £1.7bn, and it is heavily invested in building renewables infrastructure. Renewables are undeniably in vogue and set to become even more so as climate change concerns grow. The government must reach a net zero carbon target by 2050 and to do so it will need the help of big players in the renewables area. SSE should be one of them, I feel.I think the FTSE 100 offers many bargain stocks right now. These could bring you much better long-term wealth generation opportunities than cash or cryptocurrencies. If you have a lump sum to invest, I think the FTSE 100 is the best place to invest £10,000 today. It would be a shame to miss out. “This Stock Could Be Like Buying Amazon in 1997”center_img I’m sure you’ll agree that’s quite the statement from Motley Fool Co-Founder Tom Gardner. But since our US analyst team first recommended shares in this unique tech stock back in 2016, the value has soared. What’s more, we firmly believe there’s still plenty of upside in its future. Located on a rocky, wind-swept south facing shoreline; this retreat home nestles into the landscape to harmonize with its surroundings and minimize exposure to weather. The home is a vacation retreat for a family of four, who desired a low-impact home with a strong connection to land and sea. The design solution utilizes a simple ‘wedge’ shape geometry, mimicking the hillside slope beyond, and is tucked into a natural depression in the shoreline in order to diminish its visual impact.Save this picture!© Sean Airhart Living spaces open up completely on north (garden) and south (water) sides via a custom lift-slide door system. Bedrooms focus primarily on the more private, forested slope to the west and the kitchen opens onto an adjacent a rock promontory to the east. Due to the extreme weather exposure of the site, major openings are paired with rolling wall panels to protect them from punishing winter storms, as well as to provide security when unoccupied.Save this picture!© Sean Airhart Save this picture!PlanSave this picture!SectionSave this picture!© Sean Airhart The finish palette consists of local materials including douglas fir (floors, trim), western red cedar (siding, wall and ceiling cladding) and pacific madrone (furniture). The site is within the San Juan Islands National Monument, with extremely sensitive shorelines and marine environment. A clear understanding of near-shore ecology greatly impacted the design of the home. To avoid habitat loss for near-shore insects, a critical food source for endangered juvenile Chinook salmon, a garden roof seeded with native, drought tolerant vegetation has been utilized. This assembly replaces over 90% of the vegetative footprint lost to construction.Save this picture!© Sean Airhart With shallow soils, disruption to natural storm-water flow is also a critical issue. Poorly filtered runoff from roofs and other hard surfaces are a major water quality issue in the Islands. Our drainage design captures runoff along the up-slope footing and disperses it in an un-concentrated 1/1 ratio just downslope of the structure, replicating as closely as possible the pre-construction runoff condition. Lastly, the firm worked to satisfy the program requirements as efficiently as possible in order to minimize structural footprint and massing. The result is a 3 bedroom, 2 bath home that feels much larger than its modest 1,600sf size would suggest.Save this picture!© Sean Airhart Project gallerySee allShow lessBerenblum Busch Designs Cruise Terminal for Seaport in MiamiArchitecture NewsMorpholio Board is Now Available on MacArchitecture News Share United States Projects Landscape Architecture: Houses Garden Artisan CopyAbout this officeHeliotrope ArchitectsOfficeFollow#TagsProjectsBuilt ProjectsSelected ProjectsResidential ArchitectureHousesOn FacebookUnited StatesPublished on October 09, 2019Cite: “Lone Madrone Retreat / Heliotrope Architects” 09 Oct 2019. The wallet is a secure technology for managing Bitcoin with three keys managed by Legambiente and a backup key managed by Helperbit. The wallet verifies the amount raised and also notifies donors how funds have been spent. The document certifying the request for funds and the transaction are linked in the platform’s public register, enabling the verification of the sender, the recipient and the reason for the request.Donations to the Bitcoin Italian Earthquake Relief Fund included five Bitcoin from Swiss Re. The first beneficiaries were the owners of Società Agricola Etiche Terre S.S.: local producers of saffron, garlic and black truffle who lost everything in the earthquake. The service enabled the farmers to ask for funds by uploading Helperbit’s first invoice onto the platform, which activated a refund request to Legambiente.Legambiente was able to verify the request through the platform, and then transferred an amount in Bitcoin equal to the value in € of the refund. The operation was visible in the public Blockchain, and also showed proof of expenditure, with a cryptographic reference to the invoice.According to Helperbit, Legambiente is the first major non-profit organisation in Italy to accept donations in Bitcoin as well as the first NGO in the world to autonomously use Helperbit’s multi-signature wallet to manage Bitcoin.  155 total views,  1 views today  156 total views,  2 views today AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to EmailEmailShare to WhatsAppWhatsAppShare to MessengerMessengerShare to MoreAddThis4last_img read more

Presidential election campaign being covered fairly by public media

first_img News MauritaniaAfrica After its second week of monitoring domestic coverage of Mauritania’s presidential election, Reporters Without Borders today said it was pleased to report that the public media are covering the campaigns of all 19 candidates fairly. The public media have complied strictly with the instructions of the High Authority for Press and Broadcasting (HAPA) to assign free newspaper space and air time to each candidate for their individual spots and announcements. In addition to the free space, coverage of the candidates’ campaigns has also been more fairly apportioned during the second week.RADIO AND TV: The slight imbalance in favour of candidate Ould Cheikh Abdellahi in the TV news programmes and radio news bulletins noted during the first week of the campaign was corrected during the second week, Reporters Without Borders said. All the candidates had access to Radio de Mauritanie’s “Campaign Report,” the organisation found. Analysis of the quantitative data during the second week showed that an effort was made to increase the air time of the “minor” candidates. Ould Cheikh Abdellahi and Ould Daddah were accorded 12 and 9 per cent respectively during the first week. This was reduced to 9 and 7 per cent during the second week. The air time of some of the “minor” candidates doubled or even tripled during he second week. (Isselmou Moustapha went from 4 min 28 sec to 9 min 25 sec while Rachid Moustapha went from 2 min 52 sec to 8 min 52 sec.)Télévision de Mauritanie also improved its distribution of air time to the candidates. After getting 16 per cent of TV news air time in the first week, Ould Cheikh Abdellahi got 7 per cent in the second. Of the six candidates that got no air time in the first week – Moulaye Ould Jeyid, Mohamed Ahmed Ould Salihi, Isselmou Moustapha, Rachid Moustapha, Mohamed Ould Sidati and Ould Ebi El Maali – all except Ould Sidati were covered during TV news programmes in the second week. Their air time ranged from 3 min 26 sec for Mohamed Ould Salihi to 17 min 52 sec for Moulaye Ould Jeyid.PRINT MEDIA AND NEWS AGENCY: The Arabic-language daily Chaab, the French-language daily Horizons and the state news agency, the Agence Mauritanienne d’Information (AMI), all increased the volume of coverage given to Ould Cheikh Abdellahi, thereby reducing the advantage Ould Daddah enjoyed during the first week. The difference in the newspaper space given over to these two candidates in the two state dailies fell from 3.37 points in the first week to 1.5 points in the second. Similarly, each candidate received an equal number of mentions – 15 – by the AMI during the second week, against 11 mentions for Ould Cheikh Abdellahi and 14 mentions for Ould Daddah during the first week.RecommendationsIn the light of the results obtained during the first two weeks of monitoring, Reporters Without Borders recommends that:- The HAPA should issue directives to the public media as regards coverage of the political activities of the two candidates in the second-round runoff, in particular, the need to apply the principle of strict equality in the distribution to the candidates and their supporters of air time and speaking time in the broadcast media and space in the two dailies, Horizons and Chaab, and in the AMI’s dispatches.- The public media should ensure strict equality of air time and talking time in their coverage of electoral news between the two rounds. They should also continue to correct any imbalances that could result from the activities of differing degrees of importance of the candidates and their supporters.————–Monitoring roleReporters Without Borders is monitoring the electoral coverage of the public media – Télévision de Mauritanie, Radio de Mauritanie, the Horizons and Chaab daily newspapers and the Agence Mauritanienne d’Information – from 24 February and until the end of the presidential election. The public media have been chosen because they are subject to the electoral law, which guarantees equal access to all the candidates and parties participating. As a public service financed by the state, they have to a duty to behave in an exemplary manner during the elections.Method of workingReporters Without Borders calculates the time candidates are being covered and the time they are speaking on the air on all Mauritanian TV and radio news programmes. The organisation also measures the square centimetres of page space they are assigned in the Horizons and Chaab daily newspapers, and the number of references made to them in AMI dispatches. Air time: Includes speaking time and the duration of all forms of coverage (quotes, reports, comments, studio interviews and so on). Speaking time: Time spent by candidates speaking directly on the air.———-The monitoring is being carried out with financial support from the European Union and the International Organisation of Francophone Countries (OIF). On Tuesday, The FDIC and the Federal Reserve Board announced their determination for the revised “living wills” of five financial institutions. Unfortunately for Wells Fargo their plan was rejected for the second time. The agencies stated that because of this shortcoming, Wells Fargo will be subject to restrictions on certain activities until the deficiencies are remedied. In April of this year, the agencies jointly determined that each of the 2015 resolution plans, or “living wills,” of Bank of America, Bank of New York Mellon, JPMorgan Chase, State Street, and Wells Fargo were not credible or would not facilitate an orderly resolution under the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. As such, the agencies issued joint letters to these firms detailing the deficiencies in their plans and the actions the firms must take to address them, basically saying the banks were required to prove to the government they are not “too big to fail.”In Wells Fargo’s plan, the institution stated that it believed the three deficiencies were remediated as required by the 2015 Plan Feedback Letter. Wells Fargo also wrote that it continues to invest in and support projects to improve its resolvability and will continue to incorporate resolvability considerations into its decision-making processes.Specifically, the agencies determined that Wells Fargo fell short in the categories of “legal entity rationalization” and “shared services” but did adequately remedy its deficiency in the “governance” category.“Wells Fargo is committed to strengthening and enhancing its resolution planning processes, and we will continue to work closely with the agencies to better understand their concerns so that we can bring our resolution planning processes in line with their expectations,” said Wells Fargo in a statement. “While we are disappointed with the determination issued by the agencies, we continue to be dedicated to sound resolution planning and preparedness. We believe we will be able to address the concerns raised today in the March 2017 revised submission.”The Federal Reserve Board has released subsequent feedback letters issued to the firms, which describes the steps the firms have taken to address the deficiencies outlined in the April 2016 letters. To view the full report and feedback letters, click HERE. Return of the retailer: Century 21 relaunches

first_img Tags Century 21 president Marc Benitez (LinkedIn; iStock)Attention shoppers: Century 21 is coming back. The New York-based discount retail chain that built a loyal following but folded after declaring bankruptcy in September, announced its planned return last week.In a statement on Tuesday, Century 21 Stores said the decision to relaunch came “in response to the outpouring of love from the Big Apple and the admiration” of their “loyal shoppers from around the world.”The announcement was light on details, but the company said it would open its first store in South Korea this year. News about its New York and nationwide relaunch will follow in the coming weeks, the statement said. The Gindi family, which started the brand in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, in 1961, bought back the intellectual property at a bankruptcy auction in the fall. The pandemic slammed into then upended the retail industry, forcing stores like Century 21 to shutter their locations nationwide. Retailers fell far behind on rent payments, with many shedding stores, and some declaring bankruptcy or getting acquired. When Century 21 filed for Chapter 11, it said it was forced to do so after insurers declined its business interruption insurance claims.Last month, the retailer hired Marc Benitez as its president. Benitez spent nearly 14 years with the luxury goods brand Coach, and over three years with Kenneth Cole Productions. He also spent time as a vice president at Authentic Brands Group and CAA-GBG Global Brands Management Group. Benitez was a general manager at Century 21 from 1998 to 2001.The Gindis weathered a tumultuous 2020. Two months after Century 21 declared bankruptcy, developer Ben Ashkenazy sued the family, claiming it diverted money from him and damaged his reputation. The Gindis have invested in some of Ashkenazy’s commercial properties. The family claims that Ashkenazy stole money from them. US-based oil and gas company PetroTal has completed its second horizontal well, 5H well in the Bretaña oil field, located in block 95 in north-east Peru.PetroTal said that with the 863m horizontal section inside the main productive oil reservoir, 5H well is the longest horizontal well drilled to date in Peru. The well has reached the target Vivian formation at the estimated vertical depth of 2,696m.PetroTal president and chief executive officer Manolo Zuniga said: “PetroTal is pleased with the success of the 5H well and proud to play a historical role by drilling Peru’s longest horizontal well to date. I wish to thank the technical and drilling team for their efforts to ensure safe operations and their dedication directed to the 5H well.5H well produced 8,250 BOPD oil in initial productionSimilar to its 4H well, the company has used autonomous inflow control device (AICD) valves in completion of 5H well to maximise oil production. During the first three days of production, 5H well has yielded an initial production of 8,250 barrels of oil per day (BOPD).PetroTal intends to commission phase one of the Bretaña central production facilities (CPF‐1) prior to the year-end 2019, targeting an increase in full field production capacity to reach approximately 15,000BOPD. The additional capacity enables the company to focus on bringing other wells online. The company is planning for incremental implementation of phase two central production facilities (CPF‐2) in September 2020, aiming to produce approximately 20,000 BOPD.Following the annual maintenance of drill rig for approximately six weeks, the company will drill a second water disposal well, and additional oil wells.Zuniga added: “The strong well performance emphasizes the significant upside of the Bretaña oil field and the considerable growth potential the asset possesses. Our interpretation of the reservoir has been confirmed with this well and the increased production will enhance field economics.“The ongoing facility enhancements will enable us to effectively manage the increasing oil field production.” PetroTal has used autonomous inflow control device (AICD) valves in completion of 5H well to maximise oil productionlast_img read more
