the Indian dressing room when the world’s No 1 off-spinner is around "I had no clue that Ashwin has been rested for the series Actually when I got a call from the BCCI office I thought this will be a first chance for me to share the dressing room with Ashwin Seven days with a player of his calibre means I can learn a lot" Rasool first player from Kashmir valley to play for India told PTI "I was training with state team in Jammu for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy I got a call from BCCI office in the morning and now I am rushing to catch a flight to Delhi" he said File picture of Pervez Rasool PTI While in pecking order Rasool comes behind Ashwin and Jayant Yadav his own assessment is that he has become a better bowler than when he played his lone ODI against Bangladesh back in Dhaka in 2014 "This year before the Ranji Trophy there was an NCA camp for spinners only There I had sessions with Narendra Hirwani and Nikhil Chopra I believe those 20 days at NCA were very fruitful I dissected my own bowling "Because in IPL you have to also play a restrictive role I was pushing the ball faster through the air Hirwani sir told me that moment you push it faster the revs on the delivery would be lesser Nikhil sir also told me to be a bit slower through the air and give the ball more air The 38 wickets in the Ranji Trophy was a testimony to that" he explained Rasool thinks that his 3/38 for India A against England in the warm-up game also helped him get a call-up "It is very essential to perform consistently throughout the season but I believe there are certain matches where the selectors are keenly watching you If you can perform there your case becomes stronger Two of my three wickets were Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler Once you are getting wickets against an international side you know can belong to this level" said Rasool The tweaker will also get a chance to interact for the first time with senior team’s chief coach Anil Kumble "I have not had too many interactions with Anil sir This is an opportunity where I can learn a few things from him Also Virat’s presence in the side makes it easier for me as he has been my captain in the Royal Challengers Bangalore" Talk about Virat the respect that each of Indian captain’s teammates have for him was palpable in his voice "I don’t need to elaborate on Virat’s dedication But the lasting memory that has stayed with me is his innings against KKR after getting stitches in his hand He was in pain but he didn’t even flinch one bit I saw him and felt that that’s what a world class cricketer means Everyday with Virat is a learning experience" said Rasool So will he be able to cut down on the Rogan Josh and other Kashmiri delicacies Rasool starts laughing "I am trying but it is very difficult to sacrifice your love for food and especially when the world knows how delicious Kashmiri cuisine is But I am trying to cut down and obviously you have Virat as an example" For someone who has been a role model for aspiring cricketers from the valley Rasool has only one piece of advice "In Indian domestic scenario it does not happen that you have performed and not been rewarded whether it is A team U-19 or senior team It does not matter from which part of India you hail Performance never goes unnoticed" he concluded Los Angeles: A wildfire that’s burned hundreds of homes in coastal swaths of dry brush as they build containment lines around Southern California’s enormous wildfire Fire spokesman Captain Rick Crawford said yesterday that officials will remove potential fuels on the fire’s northern edge so that when winds whip up again today "there’ll be nothing left to burn" He says residents near the city of Ojai could see new smoke from the controlled burn The blaze northwest (DDT) in tea sold by leading brands across India “We had carried out a study across many cities in India over the past one year to check the quality of tea leaves sold in cities Our study has revealed the presence of residues of chemical pesticides in a majority of brands” Neha Sehgal senior campaigner of Greenpeace told reporters here She claimed that out of 49 samples tested by the non-profit organisation around 34 (94 percent) contained residues of at least one pesticide and 29 (59 percent) of the samples contained a cocktail of more than 10 different pesticides in them Also 29 (59 percent) of the samples contained residues of of at least one pesticide above the maximum residue limits set by the European Union (EU) “We had for this study collected samples from different retailers from cities like Delhi Kolkata Bangalore and Mumbai over a period from June 2013 to May 2014” she said Sehgal said there was a presence of DDT (a synthetic organic compound used as a pesticide) in 67 per cent of the tea samples “Use of DDT has been banned in India since 1989 Monocrotophos termed as hazardous by the WHO was found in 27 samples Tebufenpyrad a pesticide not registered in India and thus illegal was found in one sample It can be very toxic for the liver” she said Sehgal urged tea companies to move the tea sector away from the “pesticide treadmill” and asked them to adopt an ecological agriculture farming approach “The tea companies need to support adoption of ecological agriculture approaches like Non Pesticidal Management for the safety of consumers” she said The Tea Board of India however has slammed the study saying: “The Tea Board of India having reviewed the findings of the Greenpeace study can confirm that all the samples tested the Congress will stage an upset But there can be little doubt that the result on 18 December notwithstanding this has been an election campaign which yanked the political discourse to unseemly depths(File photo) Prime Minister Narendra Modi with his predecessor Manmohan Singh PTI This is evidenced in the clash between the serving prime minister and his predecessor Narendra Modi accused Manmohan Singh of "colluding" with Pakistan to influence the Gujarat election and the former prime minister countered saying Modi was spreading "canards" to feed his "insatiable hunger" to "tarnish every constitutional office" The ball is now back in Modi’s court—to either prove or withdraw his allegation It must be said at the outset that Manmohan Singh and Hamid Ansari are not common citizens They are former prime minister and former vice-president of the country and are bound by official protocol even after retirement While taking umbrage at Prime Minister Modi Manmohan has carefully avoided mention of why he was there and if he had informed the government of the day about attending a meeting where the incumbent Pakistan High Commissioner would be one of the guests (My colleague Sreemoy has argued this well in this piece) Manmohan will also have to answer the question of why he was dining with Mani Shankar Aiyar who had just been suspended for calling his successor incumbent of a constitution post neech So was the suspension of Aiyar an insincere politically opportune move as pointed out in this article But there’s a reverse side to this argument If that is what we expect from a former prime minister then the ask from an incumbent will have to be a grade higher Modi holds a constitutional office His words carry great import Therefore a charge of a foreign country interfering in our election is very serious raising the question: if that is so would the government of the day take action or make it an election slogan Nothing would have been remiss if the prime minister had pointed out the inappropriateness of an immediate predecessor breaking bread with officials of a country with which India has officially snapped all communication Manmohan has said that Gujarat elections were not discussed even in passing Many guests who attended the dinner meeting too have said the discussions were centred on India-Pakistan relations Initially the Gujarat election campaigns were supposed to hang on keywords linked to vikas — Gujarat model economic development bullet trains job creation demonetisation and GST (Goods and Services Tax) But by the time polling began in the state last weekend the political discourse turned out to be anything but development The issues have changed to Masjid or Mandir Rahul Gandhi’s religion and even Pakistan’s involvement in the polls The shift from important development issues to a dangerously polarising political discourse is distressing What was originally supposed to be a cakewalk for the saffron brigade in Modi’s home state seems to have turned into a tough battle for the BJP Even after demonetisation in November last year the BJP swept Uttar Pradesh polls like no party has done before The Congress failed at every stage of the Uttar Pradesh polls to connect with the voters After that Gujarat was supposed to be a cakewalk for the BJP But the Congress seems to have got under the BJP’s skin in Gujarat so much that a former prime minister is being accused of taking outside help to defeat it in the state The turn of political discourse in Gujarat from the promise of ‘vikas’ to Modi’s now-famous ‘Masjid’ or ‘Mandir’ question or Gandhi’s "janeu-dhari" soft Hinduvta make-over specifically designed for Gujarat is unfortunate And in particular the spat between an incumbent prime minister and a former one 1954 to transfer the region from Russia to Ukraine was unjust and taken behind closed doors by then Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev When the Soviet Union broke up in 1991 Moscow was too weak to resist
