first_imgFormer India captain Sunil Gavaskar heaped rich praise on Shikhar Dhawan as the left-handed opener withstood pain to score a match-winning hundred after being hit on his thumb vs Australia in a World Cup 2019 match on Sunday.Gavaskar conceded India are in a tricky position when it comes to naming a replacement for Shikhar Dhawan who has suffered a fracture on his thumb. The batting great said India can afford to wait for his recovery if the final assessment suggests a recovery period of around 15 days.Shikhar Dhawan is expected to be out of action for the next few matches and sources say that Team India is trying to have him back before India’s big-ticket clash against hosts England on June 30.Dhawan is currently with Team India physio Patrick Farhat consulting specialists in Leeds as the team management is awaiting a final assessment on the nature of Dhawan’s injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are unlikely to make an announcement on replacements until they get a clearer picture of the injury.Speaking to India Today from the UK, Sunil Gavaskar said: “Incredible. At the end of the [Australia] match, he [Shikhar Dhawan] was being interviewed, he had a band-aid. His pain threshold should be incredible. He is a strong man, well-built. He is Gabbar.Gavaskar added: “He can bear the pain but it depends on the kind of fracture. If it’s a straight fracture, you recover a little bit quicker. But if it’s a ring fracture, it will take a little bit of time.advertisement”The best case scenario is he is ready in about 2 weeks time because of the pain threshold he has. Worst case, he will be out for more than 3-4 weeks.”I would wait if the doctor says he will be ready in 15-20 days. Even if he misses the England game, then he still has games against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka to get him ready for the knockout stages. It all depends on his pain threshold.”Dhawan braved the pain after being hit on his thumb as early as the 9th over and went on to hit a match-winning 117 against Australia on Sunday.Young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant and Shreyas Iyer are being considered as replacements for Dhawan. Notably, Pant was named among the reserves for the World Cup squad.Gavaskar backs Dinesh Karthik to partner Rohit SharmaSunil Gavaskar believes Pant is the ideal replacement for Shikhar Dhawan and pointed out that the wicketkeeper-batsman might want to prove the selectors’ decision to leave him out of the World Cup squad at the first place was wrong.Nonetheless, Gavaskar also said Dinesh Karthik can be used as an opener even as KL Rahul is tipped to partner Rohit Sharma at the top of the order.”I don’t know if they have got a specialist opener as a standby. If they don’t have one, then it’s Rishabh Pant. If Pant is flown in, then Dinesh Karthik, with his experience, can open the batting. As a back-up opener, Rahul. You have Dinesh Karthik who has opened the batting for India occasionally in Tests and ODIs. So you have that option already,” Gavaskar added.”So I think, they should be looking at bringing Rishabh Pant in. He’s been in cracking, hot form. High on confidence, would probably want to show that he should have been in the team in the first place.”Also Read | Get Rishabh Pant on the plane ASAP: Kevin Pietersen suggests Shikhar Dhawan replacementAlso Read | Rishabh Pant ideal replacement for injured Shikhar Dhawan, Ajinkya Rahane not a bad option too: Harbhajan SinghAlso See:last_img
