Dell, HP and Lenovo post mixed results

first_img whatsapp Show Comments ▼ Share Thursday 19 August 2010 8:53 pm TECHNOLOGY companies delivered mixed results on Wall Street yesterday, as computing heavyweights Hewlett-Packard, Dell and Lenovo posted large profits but missed some forecasts. Hewlett-Packard’s quarterly profit climbed 6.1 per cent on higher global sales and growth in the company’s core consumer market. The world’s biggest PC producer announced $1.77bn (£1.14bn) in pre-tax gains, up from $1.67bn a year earlier. Revenue climbed 11 per cent to $30.73bn, though restructuring and acquisition costs hit overall figures. Dell said it expected a continued pick up in demand for PCs from corporate customers for the next several quarters, as revenue rose 22 per cent to $15.5bn. It beat Wall Street’s estimate of $15.2bn, thanks to strength in sales of servers and networking products as large companies upgraded equipment after years of austerity. The world’s third biggest computer maker reported net income in the quarter of $545m, up from $472m in the same period last year. It increased its income growth forecasts from 18 to 23 per cent, though shares dropped in late trading as the figures were less spectacular than investors had hoped. Meanwhile, Lenovo said it was banking on fresh demand from corporates and rapid expansion in emerging markets to fuel growth, as it unveiled a third consecutive quarterly profit.Lenovo posted a pre-tax profit of $54.86m on the three months to July, better than the $16m loss seen a year ago, but slightly below expectations for a $57.1m profit. The firm has been trying to return to its roots as an emerging markets specialist after it struggled to integrate overseas assets it acquired when it bought IBM’s laptop business in 2005. But Peter Woods, pensions partner at PwC, points out the coalition government has said it wants to raise the income tax threshold closer to £10,000 by the end of the parliament. That’s good for smaller employers: by the time they have to adhere to the new rules, the threshold will be much higher, meaning lots of part-time staff will not be auto-enroled into NEST. Q.WHEN DO EMPLOYERS HAVE TO ADHERE TO THE NEW RULES?A.The largest employers, such as Tesco and Royal Mail, will start auto-enrolling staff from October 2012. Other employers will then have to comply in stages, until the smallest (e.g. market stalls with one employee) auto-enrol staff by 2016.Q.HOW MUCH WILL EMPLOYERS AND EMPLOYEES CONTRIBUTE?A.Eventually, employers will have to contribute three per cent of earnings over £5,000, while employees must contribute five per cent of earnings (one per cent of this will be refunded via tax relief). Q.WHAT ABOUT EMPLOYERS THAT ALREADY HAVE A SCHEME?A.Employers that already have a scheme will have to show that it is broadly as good as NEST. But they will not have to show that it is exactly the same: employer contributions could be five per cent of base pay, rather than three per cent of earnings, for example. center_img whatsapp by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMisterStoryWoman Files For Divorce After Seeing This Photo – Can You See Why?MisterStoryTotal PastThe Ingenious Reason There Are No Mosquitoes At Disney WorldTotal PastMoneyPailShe Was A Star, Now She Works In ScottsdaleMoneyPailNoteabley25 Funny Notes Written By StrangersNoteableySerendipity TimesInside Coco Chanel’s Eerily Abandoned Mansion Frozen In TimeSerendipity TimesMagellan TimesThis Is Why The Roy Rogers Museum Has Been Closed For GoodMagellan TimesElite HeraldExperts Discover Girl Born From Two Different SpeciesElite HeraldZen HeraldThe Truth About Why ’40s Actor John Wayne Didn’t Serve In WWII Has Come To LightZen Heraldmoneycougar.comThis Proves The Osmonds Weren’t So Innocentmoneycougar.com Share whatsapp Tags: NULLlast_img read more

The perpetual notes lose money only if Rabobank’s core Tier 1 consolidated equity capital ratio falls below eight per cent. The Utrecht-based lender is the only private sector bank to hold a top triple A rating from Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s and had a Tier 1 ratio of 13.5 per cent in June last year. For investors to lose money on the new hybrid bonds the bank would need to lose €12.3bn (£10.3bn).Rabobank head of long term funding Michael Gower said:“The issue is very significant for the market as a whole. People are waiting anxiously to see how this goes and it could segue into a huge amount of issuance by other banks.” whatsapp Show Comments ▼last_img read more

The French commissioner warned an industry gathering yesterday that the EU “will look into current measures on remuneration and we will look into whether or not it is enough”, alongside examining whether the current rules are being followed properly. European rules dictating that at least half of bank bonuses must be deferred for three years, plus limits on cash awards, were introduced in January, and are already seen as the toughest bonus curbs in the world. “Remuneration, bonuses – these are the things that are shocking for people who find it difficult to get to the month’s end,” he said. “Banks are part of European society. They should take this into account.” Tags: NULL Ad Unmute by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMisterStoryWoman Files For Divorce After Seeing This Photo – Can You See Why?MisterStoryUndoTotal PastThe Ingenious Reason There Are No Mosquitoes At Disney WorldTotal PastUndoSerendipity TimesInside Coco Chanel’s Eerily Abandoned Mansion Frozen In TimeSerendipity TimesUndoBrake For ItThe Most Worthless Cars Ever MadeBrake For ItUndoZen HeraldNASA’s Voyager 2 Has Entered Deep Space – And It Brought Scientists To Their KneesZen HeraldUndoBetterBe20 Stunning Female AthletesBetterBeUndoAlphaCute30 Rules That All “Hells Angels” Have To FollowAlphaCuteUndoDefinitionDesi Arnaz Kept This Hidden Throughout The Filming of ‘I Love Lucy’DefinitionUndoTaonga: The Island FarmThe Most Relaxing Farm Game of 2021. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 25,000 to a seasonally adjusted 410,000, the Labor Department said, partially reversing the prior weeks hefty decline. “We see this move as a continued unwind of the weather-related distortions to the previous weeks of claims data,” said Michael Gapen of Barclays Capital. “The large drop-off in claims last week was due in part to the unwinding of the weather effects that caused a surge in claims at the end of January,” he explained. The number of people receiving benefits under regular state programmes after an initial week of aid edged up 1,000 to 3.91m. Tags: NULLlast_img read more
