WHITTIER — Coroner’s officials have identified a 12-year-old boy killed by a truck at an intersection Thursday afternoon as Elijah Ernest Valdez of Whittier. Police said Valdez was hit at about 2:50 p.m. while riding his bicycle through Painter Avenue and Lambert Road. Police said the truck had stopped for construction on Painter, and as the light turned green, the victim started to drive his bike through the intersection. The boy apparently tried to squeeze through a space between the truck and a car in front of the big-rig. The truck’s driver did not see the boy, according to Whittier Officer Jason Zuhlke. The truck struck the boy and dragged him about 40 feet. His body was pinned beneath the vehicle until a county fire rescue unit was able to free the remains. The driver was not cited or arrested, but Zuhlke said the accident is under investigation.
