first_imgGovernor DeSantis made it official, Palm Beach County will begin a five-step entry into Phase Two reopening on Tuesday. Theaters and bars inside restaurants will be able to open first. In person learning in schools will follow after the school board, county commission or the Governor decides when to reopen brick and mortar schools…could take a week or more.Despite Palm Beach County Schools Superintendent Donald Fennoy objection, Palm Beach County commissioners agreed Tuesday to ask Gov. Ron DeSantis to move the county to Phase 2 by Tuesday, September 8th. The governor approved the measure.Commissioners also recommended Tuesday that the school board vote to postpone in-person classes on its own, a suggestion that the school board’s chairman dismissed as politically unfeasible. In doing so, the school board gave control of school-reopening to the county commission. If the school board wants to delay classes further without risking state penalties, it may have to place its hopes in PBC Mayor Dave Kerner once again.Kerner says he will make the pitch on the school board’s behalf and ask Governor DeSantis personally if he would let the county’s schools open a week later than September 14th.“I said, ‘Let me see if I can make that happen,’ ” Kerner recalled telling Fennoy. “I’m trying to get the best of both worlds here.”last_img read more
